Nearby a dried up river, about 150 kilometres south of Teheran lies the city of Qum .Only the riverbed in which the city of Qom (Ghom Rugs , Qum Rugs) lies has dried up. The carpets of this carpet provenance beyond the Iranian borders, on the other hand, are widespread and highly valued. They stand for fine quality with very dense knotting. Some Persian carpets from this region have a knot density of more than 600,000 knots, consequently belong to the very fine Iranian craftsmanship.
The manufacturing of carpets began at the of the 20th century. Carpets from Qum are known for their fine workmanship with pile in wool or silk. They are often manufactured with high knot density and have varied patterns, borrowed from different areas in Iran. Sometimes details are tied in silk. It is also common with carpets manufactured entirely of silk, Silk-Ghom .
Gardens, medallions or figural carpets with plant and animal motifs are common. Today, carpets are manufactured in other places and these carpets also carries the name Qum.
Although carpets have only been knotted in this region for almost 100 years, Qum carpets are very popular and valued for their discreet luxury. The quality of natural silk from Qom is particularly well known. For example, silk carpets from Qum are highly appreciated.
The carpets are also sold under the names Ghome, Gom, Qum, Kum and Qom .
